Working on Yourself, is that Selfish?

Working on yourself.

Is that a selfish thing to do?

Is it wrong to want to develop, to make ourselves as knowledgeable, intellectual, and as self-aware as possible?

All of us know that in whatever we do, there is always an opportunity cost. In this case, it is the pursuit of others things that might matter, such as relationships, family, and social status.

Maybe there are certain expectations that people put on us, like getting married young or earning a 6-digit salary. But instead of pursuing all of those things, we decided to travel around the world, diving deep into the cultures of others because that is what we want to do. Is that selfish then, to ignore and push aside those expectations especially those of our parents?

Should we instead take those expectations as a duty that must be fulfilled?
